Hi I'm new to coins and I've been going through some old change and found this quarter with what looks like a circle stamped on the face of the coin. I can't tell if its actually an error or if something just got smashed into it.

Hi,

Unfortunately, that is just damage to the coin caused by a coin rolling machine. The part that crimps the ends of the paper rolls will often gouge a circle into the coins on the end of the roll. Keep looking, there is still good stuff out there!
