Hi guys, I just picked up this penny in a coin collection at a garage sale. It looks and feels like an off metal error. It's a bight lighter, the edges are white, and its got a silvery/gold finish to it. It also has extra metal on the reverse as seen in the pics which is indeed raised above the surface of the coin. The coin in question is on the left, the coin on the right is just a normal 1961 penny for comparison. If anyone can identify this for me that'd be great or any info at all would be nice. Thanks guys!!

Also, this is my first post here and I look forward to being a part of this community!

The extra metal on the reverse is the left over solder from a pin being attached to it . The cent was most likely plated with something to give it the colour you see .

That's what my first thought was. But the odd penny definatley feels lighter then the normal. Unfortunately my scale broke last week and I haven't been able to get a new one so I can't confirm this yet.

to CCF Terim, fellow Michigander. A new scale doesn't cost much and a weight would help a lot. The 1956 does look larger then the 1961, is it?

Unfortunately, I don't believe the '56 is larger than the '61, it looks to be the same width as well, I just ordered a new scale so that'll be the deciding factor when it comes in.

Odds of it being a plated penny used for jewelery, qite high
Odds that it's a reproduction made for use in jewelery, possible
Odds of it being an off-metal strike, slim to none.
