After viewing coins on and auction site. I notice some are already graded UNC improperly cleaned.
One I saw mentioned Environmental Damage.
Anyway to tell when the coin is Raw.
Or do you have to use a Loupe to look in the deep void areas?

I already read some threads on cleaning but nothing really to figure improperly cleaned.

Appreciate and thanks.

I will get a better handle on this when I view at a coin show.
I noticed it is better when I look on a large LCD 36 inch and zoom in.
Hard on this newer laptop I'm using. Lots of coins I see on Auction site are dull to shinny etc.
Thanks for the links anyone else post links on this subject.

improperly cleaned? is there really a way to "properly" clean?

a good digital picture will often show hairline scratches that are hard to see with the naked eye, but sellers who are trying to hide something often don't publish those high quality pictures. short of seeing the coin in hand, with a loupe (buying from a seller with a return policy) I would say bid/buy online accordingly.

if its a raw higher valued coin then buy it at a coin show or reputable dealer IN PERSON.

Exactly why I love coin shows. If it is a fairly large show with lots of educationally decent sellers, you can start conversations with many of them and ask that same question. Then usually they will show you the differences. Some will take the time to explain what to look for. Some won't but you can just pass those by.

There is a guy on ebay that sells HIGHLY POLISHED Mercury dimes. He's not trying to fool anyone, but he isn't excatly forthcoming. In the standard disclaimer, he says something like (paraphrasing)... Most of these coins are between 50 to 100 years old. You should expect that they have been cleaned at some point during that time. It is very obvious from 'good' quality photos that ALL of his Mercury dimes have been whizzed, polished or cleaned.
