Doug good point. I wasnt alive at the time so I personally dont have a before and after image of him, though I do understand the bay of pigs was a bigger deal than its made out to be now. Id like to see that on a farewell coin if possible for the series. I guess for assissinations I try and look at it where if that didnt happen would we have this, with Lincoln winning the civil war I think you can say yes with JFK I'm not so sure. I might feel differently had I lived though that day in Dallas I cant say for sure.
Im fine with getting rid of them completely, though theres a couple I think should get a turn before we do or have a mix of some denominations have them and some dont. While I like old coins I dont really just want to start old series again either. Maybe as a one off anniversary year type thing, but surely were more creative than that. Also like mentioned I havent been impressed with the new Nickel and Penny so if thats what theyd all look like Id personally rather keep what we have

I think the political debates about who should be featured on a coin show exactly why we shouldn't put real people on coins, no matter who it is, george washington, abe lincoln, thomas jefferson etc. there will always be someone who is upset. But I think y'all have made some good points about these people, but just because they were influential and important people doesn't mean they should be on a coin though. I vote for the Buffalo nickel obverse as the new universal obverse for all us circulating coinage. lol

The political discussion has been somewhat relevant, but there is a good chance it could hijack this thread.
That being said, let's move back towards the original topic.

paparet. So basically you are complaining that the Mint offers up a wide variety of products for the consumer to choose from. Said consumer has the right to buy or not buy of their own free will. No one puts a gun to your head. These products they offer generally are accepted by the target consumers and are therefor purchased. Again, in a completely open market where the consumers do not have to purchase the items. But they do. And the mint makes money. OK, now that I type that out I see how awful that is. How absolutely horrid that business model is. Saint, thank you for the explanation. You are the first person I have seen who has actually said WHY they don't want the Presidents on the coins. I will not respond further however, as if I did, Jbuck would surely cyber slap me.

Get the Presidents of the coins and I think you would increase the amount of interest in collecting exponentially. First, these designs are tired. They have all been around going on 50 years and many people with "collector" personalities like the idea of being able to collect an entire series. New designs would keep multiple series in each denomination in circulation and get new interest in coins. It would also keep the Jefferson nickle from becoming a 500+ coin set, who wants that many of any one coin? Second, politics. I couldn't disagree and agree more with SR. Our politics are extremely far apart, why create that divide in our coinage too? Pointless.

I think the interesting thing is - most of us are the only ones who will care what they do to the coins, and most of the rest of the public won't really even know or care - until a change is made. I hope they do something that would pique interest. Maybe even a shock value like the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter.. I have to agree tho - the recent trend in designs has me worried they'll fail to actually choose any that would be interesting.
