I am not yet a cashier at work yet but it seems to be ok for the cashiers to buy money from the tills! Yesterday a cashier bought 2 1928 1 dollar bills and a 1957 dollar bill! They were worn but nonetheless a neat find. One of the cashier was thumbing through the quarters looking for State Quarters they needed. Should be interesting once I am on the register!

As long as it is OK with the management, great. I've known many people that have really come up with some great finds doing that. At one place there was a lady that put aside all the Wheat back cents for me and usually that came out to 5 to 10 a week. Then she quit that job.

That's great! I miss the days when I worked at registers and searched the coins.

Will they let you do that if you happen to work at the US Mint as well? Can they look for errors and stuff?

A friend of mine works behind a register (a non collector friend) and brought me all the coins from the 2005 silver proof set last week. they are all in very good condition no dings only a smudge or two on the half.
the sad part...... (someone lost there collection). my friend got to work around 3:PM and they guy she relieved said they had come in the morning and that he had been giving them pretty shinny coins out as change all day. he now know better. now he calls me lol

Sure! But that can't take them off the shop floor. (And of course if they see you frequently looking through the coins you'll probably get scheduled for a lot more strip searches. )

I found a reedless edged Dime in a cash drawer once when I was a teenager. :)

I also knew a bank teller that sold me a pack of 50 $1.00 silver certificates for face. That was awesome.
