Has anyone out there received any, what you may call "suspicions" second chance offeres. I was looking at a group of coins that a seller had psoted and the 4 coins that I did not win, all came back as second chance offers. this is over a span of two days. The buyer has a high rating count (1000+ @99+% and the "buyers" are mostly different.
I don't know if I am being paranoid, but I don't think I have had that many second chance offers in all the years I have been bidding. Anyone have any thoughts?

I got a second chance. The guy had more of the sets I was bidding on. ('46 mint set if I remember correctly). I took him up on it, got the set, and had no issues. I still get occasional email from him through ebay. It end up that he just turns over a lot of mint sets.

I was outbid on a sheet of privy mark maples and received a second chance offer, I wanted them bad enough that I and made payment right away. After I thought about the process, I had a strong suspicion the seller put in a "stink bid" last minute and then offered to the next highest bidder. So I won't do that again, I felt like I had been taken advantage of but can't blame anybody but myself for taking the bait. Since this experience I now disclose "I do not make second chance offers" in all my ebay listing.

I've accepted a number of second chance offers over the years. And passed on others. IMHO most are legitimate. Usually the seller will include a message with the offer saying they have more than one available. I always check out the winning bidder's stats and feedback as well as the bidding on the item. If the winner is a frequent bidder across multiple sellers with a decent feedback score (IE not 0-5) and there was interest in the item from other bidders then I'm not worried about it being a scam. I also consider whether it is a good price for the item or not compared to completed listings and book value. If it is, then I'm less worried about fraud because I'm still getting it for a good price. If anything makes me feel uncomfortable then I'll pass. If it's something I wanted then I'll keep an eye out to see if it gets relisted.

I have received these as well and in addition to what has been said here already, I have e-mailed the seller's back through E-Bay to ask if they sent the second chances to me.

When I was selling mint rolls (from a mint box), I always gave the underbidders second chance offer... it made it easier for me to sell additional rolls, and the person another chance to grab a roll. I thought at the very least, the person who is given the second chance offer, can always decline...

I have had people to do that to me trying to run up the price. I never accept second chance offers because of this.

Never had any problems but I did notice the one 2nd chance offer was a little higher than what I offered. I did take a second chance offer for what I bid once though.

As long as the Second Chance offer is the same price I bid and lost the auction I have no problem with it - it's a second chance to get what I wanted at the price I was willing to pay for it. And even then I don't have to take it if a bit of sober second thought tells me I'm paying too much.

Yes, I have received a suspicious second chance offer. I suspected shill bidding afterwards) opponent had 85% of bids with the seller) and I came in second. Second chance offer came stating winner backed out. I countered by saying I would be thrilled to buy, but only at my "winning" bid after excluding all bids made by the other person. No answer. Coin was relisted and same bidder won again and no feedback was ever submitted.
That said, I'd have no problem going the second chance route if the auction was legit and the price was below my personal max. I am a bit cynical about second chances, but a couple of nice coins are in my collection from them.

I recently received a 1932 far 2 nickel through a second chance offer. The person who paid more (and won) got the near 2 version posted in the ad. I got the Far 2 nickel because the seller either didn't know what they had or accidentally sent it out without checking. There was never a picture posted of the coin so it was pure luck and very cheap :).

I like them when there is a duplicate lot and I don't want to wait for another auction to bid on. I'm not thrilled about them when I bid up a price or got caught in a bid war, followed by an offer to pay for my highest bid. Feel a bit cheated even though it isn't fault of seller...sometimes I ask for a discount in that case...

I was in an auction on the bay one time and this guy had put his auto bid with a high cap on. The final price for 20 50 cent pieces ended up being 440. I think the guy buying had second thoughts so I received the second chance offer and politely turned it down.

I've had great success with second chance offers on ebay. If I'm going after a coin I will only bid as high as I'm willing to pay. I learned my lesson as a rookie years ago and got caught up in a couple of auctions. Any time I've been given a second chance offer it's usually for less than what my highest bid was, so I'm more than happy to take the deal. Of course there are some shady sellers, but if you do your homework and stay smart you can always catch on rather quickly. I like getting a second chance offer for a coin I didn't win.

Most major ebay sellers use shill snipe accounts to bid any silver coin to at least melt, and often any coin/note to market value. These second chance offers are how they sell the item without having to relist.
