According to this article, if RCM has its way, we'll soon be doing without coins entirely.

I hope the mint doesn't replace coins. And if they do they should say the date so coin collectors can gather plenty of coins. Getting rid of the penny was bad enough.

It's not always about the date. It's about varieties.

If this goes through I may just stop buying items that are under $10 altogether and concentrate my efforts at the price club. Exactly what would they be minting anyways? More NCLT junk? Those are shiny discs/cylinders, not coins.

Besides, aren't there transactions you'd rather keep private? Like toiletries and junk food?

Bitcoins, Mintchips, google glasses; what next? Microwaves which allow you to cook, text message and make payments at the same time?

Just another step toward a cashless society. Even our paper money is plastic. Won't be long before a chip is inserted in our plastic cash for security reasons. How many tracking devices do we need? Seriously...?

But coins will always be legal tender, so it has to be accepted as such. People like convenience, so they will accept whatever toys are tossed at them. Sad, actually...

It sounds similar to hong kong's octopus card. Still there will have to be coins available for foreigners visiting the country. You cant expect all foreign visitors to stop and get a card like that.

But, what's the point of that "mintchip" ?

I would rather use my credit or debit card.

NO thank you. Unless the government passes the savings 100% to individual taxpayers (they won't), I am not on board with a digital currency, especially not a proprietary one from the mint. Bit Coin made a lot of sense, the recent pump and dump notwithstanding.
