Went to one of my favorite banks today and the teller handed me a Silver colored Rutherford Hayes Dollar Coin with a P mint mark.

It weighs 8.0 grams.

If it is Silver plated would it not weigh more?

Looking for what it may be. Thank You

First one I have seen. Are they fairly common and where do they come from?

Could it be a high school science project that ran amok? The other day I found a gold colored Sacajewea and when I checked it at a lcs was told that it was proof coin. I just don't remember such a gold colored coin from that period. Another high school project?

They are just so far out of the realm of things that I look at them a curiosity.

Maybe they are actually platinum plated instead of silver plated? Still not worth anything over face value due to the extremely small amount of platinum, but this site sells a set of 16 of them for "only $179.95!"

Most commonly, American silver $1 coins weigh approximately 26 grams or more. To be totally sure of what you have is silver; get your coin checked by a professional coin grading institute.
