It's an 1816 N-3. Currently R-4, but I'd say it's a bit closer to R-5. This one even has a hole for easy carrying. Couldn't pass up for the price.

What's the R-4 and N-3? Are they varieties or something? Where could somebody look up information no those?

I believe R-4 means rarity 4 and N-3 means newcomb variety 3

Rarity is measured on a scale of 1 to 10.1 (or sometimes just to 10)
http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Features.aspx?page=7a

A rarity of 4 means there are an estimated less than 5000 in existance while a rarity of 5 would mean there is less than a thousand

Tetromibi: Early coin dies were produced in such a fashion that each die was slightly different, thus many years later researchers were able to catalog the coins struck by those dies. For middle date (1816-1839) I can recommend two books that can help you with attributions.

"The Cent Book" by Jjohn D Wright
"United States Large Cents" by William C. Noyes

A word of caution, these books are somewhat expensive, so if you have an interest in early copper you should join Early American Coppers (EAC)( http://www.eacs.org/ ), and as a member you can get good discounts on books.

I love Large Cents. So far, it's probably my favorite piece in my collection.
