Here I have an 1887 british penny with a crown and the number 10 stamped on the head of Queen Victoria. Does anyone have any idea what this means ?
Many thanks

It just looks like a counter stamp that someone put on it so they could find it again.

No, it is not an official mark and was not put there by the Mint. I suspect someone had a metal stamp in this form (perhaps to stamp a piece of military machinery) and simply used a penny as a convenient piece of metal to test their stamp.

Cool. You could probably find a buyer somewhere, especially if you figured out the significance of the stamp (unfortunately I'm at a loss).

I saw another of these last Friday with a note in copperplate handwriting to the effect that it was a pass identifying a temporary member of staff in a (British) government department - the department or section being denoted by the number under the crown.

I've no idea whether this is correct, however, it seems credible to me.

A nice find.

Probably not, more likely one specific section in one building in a Ministry.

I'd go military I have seen the counter mark on cannons I believe so leads me to believe it is either impressed by the military or possibly by the producer of the item itself
