I was helping my friend work on his car the other day and his dad came up to the shop and I told him about how I started collecting coins last summer. He asked what coins I had found/purchased so far and what I was trying to get soon. I told him I'm trying to due a type set between 1900-current and that I wanted to focus on WWII coins as well as barbers since I currently have none of those series. He said he'd help me out and give me a 1943 steel penny cause he had a couple rolls of them. My buddy called me last night and said his dad gave him the coins and he brought them over tonight. He not only game me 1 he gave me 2 1943's. They're not in the best shape but the thought to just give me a couple to help my collection was really nice and much appreciated.

He also asked how I got into collecting and told him I use to save wheats and foreigns from when I was a kid but started really looking and buying last summer when I found a 64 quarter in my change one day. He started when he was around 20 when he found a 1943 copper penny. He said he was just so happy to have found it thinking he struck gold. After looking at it through a magnifying glass realized someone made it out a 48.

That's cool and really nice of him. My dad and I aren't really that close but I guess somehow me and the fact I had started to collect coins came up when he was talking to someone at work and the guy brought in a Krause price book to give me the next day. I learned a lot from that book. :) I need to get a new book soon though, that one is getting a bit outdated now. Plus, the Barber dime pages in it have seen better days and are hanging on by just a tiny bit of binding.

That was really nice of your friend's dad! My dad got me started in coin collecting when I was about 9 years old and we still collect together. I'm currently working on getting the youngest of my three sons interested in coin collecting. His two older brothers were never much interested; however, he is showing some interest. Best of luck with your collection. Enjoy!!

Nice of him to even think about helping someone with coins. Guess that is one of the nicer things about a coin collector, mostly nice people.
