Design looks right, but does it rust like that?
Could it be a result of the cleaning the coin have went through?

Absolutely it is. How I know points to a couple key focal points on the coin. First is the die crack that runs through the rays on the reverse. Second is the single clash on the Eagle's shoulder area. This is actually a very nice VAM even though the grade isn't too high. Which would explain the money it's bringing in currently.

Which variety is it? I wasn't aware of an added-value 1922-S VAMs.

I think the coin is genuine. Probably the color of the toning and maybe a little bit of dirt that is making it look like rust. The strike looks quite sharp especially for a date/mint mark that tends to come soft.

I saw an MS63 that was an uglier color than this yesterday go for big bucks. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
