I just got a copy of the 3rd ed off of Amazon, Before you buy it be aware that it is mostly dealing with toning, removing toning, and re-toning if you will. Since Toning is a buzz word for tarnishing of the surface silver of the coin. It is due to sulfur and oxygen. The thicker the layer of oxidation is what accounts for the different colors.
It is a grouping of Mr. Whites articles for the different magazines and newspapers dealing with coins.
There is only two articles dealing with cleaning of coins in the sense that most here would use the term cleaning. the removing of physical curd or build up of other than corrosion/oxidation on the surface of silver coins. He does cover what he calls the 4 types of cleaning. Covering copper and silver coins, the type of chemical solutions applied and why and what they do to the oxidation matrix, and what they remove. with before and after photo's. a fifth type that he discusses briefly is electrolytic cleaning of toned silver coins.
A lot of the articles deal with the removal of oxidation on the atomic level chemically if you will.
I will also add some thing on buying books from Amazon or other used books sites. Some people that have books that are out of print, or generally not available for a wide reading group tend to over price the items. They also tend not to sell them.
This book was published in it's 3rd edition in 2012.
The ISBN 978-0-9713924-1-0
It is published and distributed by American Sports Media.
I have no opinion on the "toned" coins and their collecting. After all, as Mr. White says it is oxidation of the metals surface continues, unless sulfur and oxygen in the air are prevented form reaching the coins surface.
He did some tests on the slabs by the grading services and found that they are not air tight!
I am waiting for another seller on Amazon to make right a sale of another book on cleaning coins. They sent me some 10 pages relic and metal detector self published piece of cheesy pamphlet, instead of the hard cover book I ordered.
They are supposed to send the correct book.
The excuse was somebody in their warehouse sent the wrong book. Like they have a warehouse, and the people filling orders can't read the title? Plus don't put your street address on the return label. Google street view is great for finding their (ware)house. If and when they send the correct book, I will post about the wrong book and the correct one.
