Ok. I know this set has been discussed many times since it was first mentioned and speculated on but since the release date upon us I am on the ropes. My question is will ungraded by TPG sets of this issue as well as other mint issues such as modern commemoratives ever be worth even the original sales price as most home shopping shows and ebay continue to pound the need of a MS70 or PF70 into the blind masses as the only grade to own?

Yes - absolutely. I buy almost exclusively original packaged mint items. I have nearly all the modern commemoratives and have bought many at a premium (sadly) because I didn't buy them straight from the mint. The coin shows I have gone to recently had nearly all these coins at marked up prices - in the original packaging.
I'll have a couple of these sets that won't be graded and "if" I ever decide to sell them I expect I'll be just fine.

I have been buying almost all of the Mint issued stuff directly from the mint, then the real cool stuff I buy a slabbed set too.

All you have to do is look at the ebay auctions for the OGP sets. They seem to do just fine and you would be hard pressed to find any of the ASE sets that are selling for anywhere close to their original issue price.

All depends on the set, some appreciate, some hold their price, and a few will lose. The graded 70s will gain the most value but the all will for real popular things like the Buffalo one

I really like both coins so if there is any way whatsoever I can I will get at least one set and may get two. I don't expect there to be a shortage of them since there is no limit on how many are to be made though like the SF coins were, the only limit is a 4 week window to order them

It would be interesting to find out what the 4 week window really means in terms of what is bought numbers wise.

This set must be getting a lot of play since the Mint website is bogged down, at least for me, today.
The home page was easy to get to, but then got error messages about six or seven times in a row, when I tried to shop. Finally, I logged in first and was able to put a couple of these sets in my cart, but right now I'm trying to get into the annual sets page to order a couple silver proofs.
It's been about 15 minutes so far.
Edit: Another 10 minutes, or so, and SUCCESS!!
Two of the West Point Mint set and three silver proofs.

It took me 51 minutes to complete my transaction this morning. I logged in at 08:50 PST and waited. But once the ASE Set went on sale, the website was brought down down to its knees and it took forever to proceed from one page to another.

69 is about equal to raw. But 70s can be a crap-shoot as far as QC. For a parallel journey, check out 2009 UHR gold. There, raw actually outperforms 69.

Quote: There, raw actually outperforms 69. Ummm...I can easily make a slabbed 69 become a raw specimen.

The raws can outperform the 69s because the mints quality is so good now that everyone expects a 69 at minimum. So if you have that thats what you get, but if its raw you think theres a chance it could be a 70

I am one of many who actually prefer the raw - with OGP over a slabbed 69 set myself. While you can pulled a coin out of a slab - you'll also lack all the packaging and have just a raw coin.
I agree with many others - most of these coins grade 69 or 70 anyway - probably the only difference in my 69 in OGP and a 69 in a slab - is mine will have the OGP.

Likely that is the only difference. Theres very few things the mint puts out where a 69 would be in question. For special sets at least a good number of people will sell the slabbed 69s with the ogp boxes for those who like it like last years set. I havent tried it but I think if theyd made the box is a tad wider you could have actually stored the slabs in them
