I'm not really a fan of gold plated coins, but a very nice design. What's the metal under the gold?

I believe you have a medal rather than a coin. The piece was available in multiple versions - gold-plated, silver-plated, copper, copper-nickel and brass.

About £3 seems fine for such a collectible.

I don't like plated coins but for £3 you can't really go wrong.
