Sweet! That's awesome! Surprising someone didn't notice it before it got so circulated, but I guess people really didn't care about that stuff back then?

Pretty cool. What I find interesting is that it was in circulation so long. Unlike now, cents weren't unnoticed change then. I'm surprised somebody didn't pull it from circulation and hang on to it.

Curious as to whether it's an N-4 or N-5. Does the last S in STATES extend past the leaf tip or is it entirely over the leaf?

EDIT: May also be the N-6, N-7, N-8 obverse. Can you post a reverse picture? Does part of STATES show up twice?

Does the reverse show a uni-strike or a die strike on the second strike?

I guess the value of money back then was worth more then saving a odd piece (mint error) they came in contact with.

I'd say N-8. Shame about the alteration. Maybe that's why no one pulled it from circulation earlier. Really cool coin. I assume you want to keep it.

Even in that condition, it's still a piece I would want to own in a bad way! Thanks for sharing this with us!

I bet they were thinking "Whew! They took it even though it is damaged . Glad to be rid of it"

That is a really neat find - shame about the reverse "modification".
