I don't know exactly how many, but I do know the number is going down all the time.

This is Coin Community. If it relates to coins, we've already talked about it.

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=68266

Speculation advanced by others thinking about the subject ranges from about 1.5%-8% of all original mintage which was 25,824,458,676, most of that based on anecdotal data from personal search success rates. Any way you look at it, there are a whole_bunch left out there.

I searched two boxes of cents two weekends ago.
For wheats I found:
13 50's
11 40's
1 - 1927 P
1 - 1918 P
1 - 1915 P

That works out to .54%, or one wheat for every four rolls.

Billions of them. Every time I search some rolls I find one. Around 1 or 2 rolls a Wheat cent is inside.

A few less than there were yesterday and a few more than there will be tomorrow! I am doing my part to slowly remove them all from circulation.

Wheat pennies are still out there. I searched $18 FV of bank rolls yesterday and found 3 common wheats.

I think the supply of wheat cents in circulation has not changed much in 30 years. I find about as much per roll as I did in the mid 80s. The quality is different today as I seem to never find BU wheat's anymore.

However, I think that as we see the baby boomers getting older we will see more wheat's in circulation. Common date BU coins may come back as "the kids" just put them back into circulation. I don't think that they will last very long in circulation, but over the next 20 years I think finding honey hole boxes of wheat's will be more common.

A while back I suggested a statistical concept called circulation obsolescence when discussing my nickel search find rates.

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=58454

Using that concept ... and my personal 'find rate' of LWC at 0.382% (50,000 coins searched) ... I can estimate there are approximately 98,650,000 wheat cents remaining in circulation today.

I am a little curious about the full meaning of the question. In circulation could mean just the stuff that normal people use everyday or also include the hoarded coins. Nickelsearchers number would seem to only include coins used on a daily basis, correct me if I'm wrong about that assumption. What about asking how many wheaties have been pulled out of circulation by the mint and melted down. Has this happened to any extent? Would the mint have a reason to cull wheat cents? Imagine the possibility of becoming a millionaire with just wheat cents? How big does your basement have to be to store them? hahahaha.
