I was dumping my coins from my latest roll search and found this on the coin machine. Wikipedia says this is worth $5.19 American dollars at face value. I guess that is what it is worth or is it worth more by chance?

The main problem with getting rid of face value coins is that you have to go to that country to actually spend it. Local banks aren't interested - at least they aren't here in the UK. Perhaps you know somebody that will be visiting and can use it - that's probably the best way of realising the most for it.

I read it is often the highest valued denomination in the world in regular use, worth more than the British 2 pound coin. It is worth currently $5.05 American dollars at face value.

It's a cool coin to have in your collection! They're very commonly used here since there are no 100 or 500 yen bills (like the $1 and $5 bill in the US) and coins of those denomination are used instead. I doubt there's any extra value, but it's worth a solid $5 at face value. It has some really cool anti-counterfeiting features:

From the Japan Mint website:

Additional features found which are not on the mint's website:

Really cool that you just randomly found such an interesting coin!

It's still a fair bit of money in a circulating coin. I have a collection of them and because of their face value - it does sting! Imagine having 20 of those if you collect them year by year - they add up very quickly!

I sold this coin on ebay for face value plus shipping. It didn't really qualify for my world coin grab bag I find in coin machines or rolls so I sold it because the face value alone gives it value and it was free since I found it.

in japan itself, at least in the past, there was a practice of fraudulent use of korean 500 won coins instead of 500 yen coins:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/500_yen_coin#History

(the trick doesn't work on vending machines anymore, but can probably go unnoticed in cash retail... not that I have ever done it myself, I should say though)
