My daughter was born last year and originally I wanted to buy her every Canadian coin made last year but I see now that that would require more money than I have budgeted. I would like to buy her one coin to represent her birth year, be it gold or silver or any metal. What is the best coin made last year? I am referring to the best design and most interesting design. Which coin is the best numismatic coin issued last year? I am not interested in investment potential, only design and build quality.
I was originally leaning towards the 1kg Dragon coin. The design on that one is amazing, but is it the best coin made last year?
Hope you can help me find the perfect coin for my daughter.

This is a hard question to answer to. Everyone have their own favourite coin sand what I consider the best may turn out to be the ugliest coin in your eyes. But here's the list of coins I liked from last year. You can search and see if some of them catch your eyes.. 2012 Glass Bumble Bee $20 Silver Coins 1/25 gold farewell to the penny Fractional Penny set twon loons In term of baby related, some folks like to buy the baby set coins. you may able to find this in some local post office: http://store.gatewestcoin.com/cgi/v...004&t=227586Out of all the lunar calender coins, I like the 2012 'Year of the Dragon' (Lunar Lotus - Scallop Shaped) the most. good luck on your search

I'm not looking for a baby gift, but thanks for your suggestion. I already have the silver baby coin with the feet. I just don't feel this is a great coin. The design is not very interesting and I feel it does not represent the best of 2012.
I agree that the fractional penny set would be a nice gift. But I am looking for something with a good theme and impressive engraving like the Group of Seven set. Was there an even better coin that this series of coins?

I have the Full Pink Moon for my daughter, comes in a nice wooden display.
IMO I don't feel there were a lot of coins in 2012 that have impressive engravings and themes.

@coin_games Quote: I have the Full Pink Moon for my daughter, comes in a nice wooden display. I have one of those too. I don't think it will ever be a money maker but I don't care it looks very beautiful in real life and is easy to display. Thanks.

The silver w/ pink gold penny from the special proof set? Or the half ounce version if you prefer? If she was born in the winter then there are the snowflake or snowstorm coins.

I think the Best coins of 2012 was not even made last year. I think the best coins were the Bank of Canada Hoard Coins. I bought my daughter the 1912 $5 and $10 gold coins. The hand picks coins may not be the best numismatic coins but are very good. The design is as good if not better than most last year. The best part is they are a good investment. I also like that they are 100 years old and represent the financial crisis we went through recently and the value of having gold to on hand and a day when our currency was backed by gold. They can still be purchased if you have access to a Mint Rep.
Other than that the 1812 gold coin is also my favorite, it goes well with the 1912 $5 or $10 coins.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I like the 1812 gold coin, it has a simple but nice design. Some of the other gold coins are nice but out of my price range.
Funny there are not more coins that came out last year that people consider great coins. Nobody even mentioned the glow in the dark dino coins or the glass bee coin.

Quote: Funny there are not more coins that came out last year that people consider great coins. Nobody even mentioned the glow in the dark dino coins or the glass bee coin. These are just gimmicks. Could be good only as entire series, but not the "best" coins. Dino coins - I gave them to my 5 yrs son as entertainment coin. I agree with someone who said: IMO, the best coin will be one of the 1912-1914 gold coins. The best - all three 1912-1914 $5 coins. Your choice also seems good for me. And this is my opinion, while previously (first day of those coins sale) I even didn't want to buy them - was entirely in the silver coins. Was lucky to change my mind on the next day.. Added: I read again your first post. I think, 1 kg Dragon was also great choice. As the coin - very nice, I like the Dragon (actually from the 1oz Scalloped Dragon decided to collect all the series). As representation of the "2012" - what could be better then coin, that actually represents this year? On the same level 1912 $5 or $10 gold coin - direct representation.

A close second would be the fact that your daughter was born the year that Canada discontinued the 1-cent coin. The 5 ounce 1-cent Farewell to the Penny is a nice, large symbolic item, and of course, has the classic Kruger Gray design of the 1-cent reverse that we all know (but future Canadians may never know...) http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-Canada...281102812036

This is easy. Get one of the last penny commemoratives (the small gold one or the silver with selective pink gold plating).
It's her birth year and the major numismatic event that year was the end of the Cdn penny.
