Hi! Got inspired by Sudz 1857 FEC that he had for 42! years.

This is my first American coin and it's been in my collection for about 17 years (not even close to Sudz but then I'm only 25 years old) and I guess is the reason I like the Barber coins as much as I do

By using the grading-guide on David Lawrence I would say VF20, maybe VF25 due to the band under Liberty. I don't now if the damage on the egdes has any effect on the grading.

Maybe I'm overgrading it.

I'll add one with the LED-light on so you can see the band under LIBERTY better. Hard to see but the Y is visible.

One more thing. A funny story about this coin.

Years ago when I went through my coins and found this one. I Googled "What's the value of a 1901 Quarter Dollar?"

I think most (if not all) of you here know the answer if the coin has the mintmark "S" under the eagle?

As you can see there's a little mark on the left under the eagles tail...
I must have spent HOURS using a crappy loupe looking at that spot, and YES, I saw an "S" scratched in under the tail!!

JACKPOT!!

After some more Googling I learned that's not how you put mintmarks on coins in America

I'll add a picture to show you how the scratch looks like with "abit" more zoom then my loupe had back then.
Although the top of the "S" is missing, you must addmit it could have been an "S" if you're looking with greedy eyes.

Common, I was hoping I've had a fourtune lying around

That's the story about my first American coin.
Thank you Studz for the inspiration.
Welcome all to put a grade on it

Yea sorry but the S would be on the opposite of the tail, but it's still a nice Fine coin.

jsbruton: Yes, and not scratched into the coin

I know abit more about mintmarks now, but this coin always puts a smile on my face after that Well ok, for a couple of days I was disapointed when I didn't hit the jackpot. But that makes it even funnier now

Glad you liked the coin
