Received some cruddy coins, some broken today. Very pleased with them I can practice cleaning without worrying about spoiling anything of interest.

I tried to get some distilled water but ended up with demineralised water. It is working, but I googled it and it is not the same as distilled water, so I have ordered some from Amazon.

After a couple of hours soaking, some of the crud is coming off but it will be a long process and my rose Bush may be thornless by autumn.

What do you use to light and magnify s o that you can see what you are doing? I have a good light and a loupe but I am one hand short to be able to clean and see at the same time!

The budget doesn't stretch to a microscope and the magnification of lamp magnifier on Amazon looks woefully inadequate.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

To have your hands free:
Not sure what types you may find in your area or can order through the mail (post)

If you are planning on cleaning a lot of coins than you should probably buy a Stereo Microscope. One that is 10 to 30 power. You should be able to find them on ebay for under $100.

Demin and Distilled will work equally well. They are both water which has been stripped of its trace dissolved minerals.

I just sprung for one of these bad boys, $42 shipped.

Should be fun, it hooks right to the computer via USB.

I use a brass wire brush to clean coins to good effect, and with few "oops" coins.

Flea markets can be good for finding some of the 'stuff'. A little known secret ..... 50mm SLR lenses off of old film cameras make excellent 'desk' loupes (a bit too large for your pocket !) A good Nikon or Yashica etc can often be found for $5 and have sharp resolution with no distortion around the edges. The real old ones weigh a bit much (all metal) but the newer ones are light weight.
