What's the best way to mail slabbed coins safely? Are standard padded envelopes from the post office OK? Should they be wrapped with extra bubble wrap? I don't want to overdo it. But I want to find a middle ground between safety & cost. What has been your experience?

I use square CD-sized bubble envelopes from Staples - the theory being that the shape isn't the traditional rectangular one for shipping coins - and cut two pieces of cardboard slightly larger than the slab. This I encase in tape, providing protection against punctures scratching the slab.
Such a package ships at about 5 ounces. I don't believe it will make the new 1/4" limit, though.

I wrap the slab in a strip of bubble wrap, seal it in a self-sealing bag, and ship it in a bubble mailer. this may be overdoing it, but you would be surprised how many packages I've had delivered from the post office with footprints on them.

Wrap a couple of layers of bubblewrap completely around the coin. Then put it either in a bubble mailer or a small box (the box should have popcorn, wadded up parer or more bubblewrap to keep the coin from moving around).

Most of the slabs that I've received have been in bubble envelopes. I've never had any arrive damaged.

If you want safety for valuable coins, send it registered mail. This way it is logged and locked into a safe. There is a chain of custody the whole way to the new owner. It's the ONLY way that is safe at the Post Office.

As noted by Morganator, nothing beats registered mail. No place for it to vanish then.
