To me, this looks like a split serif (see arrow). However I must be wrong since it is not listed on coppercoins. I thhink I need some guidance. Thanks for any help. As near as I can tell, what appear to be separation lines in the date appear in the photo only, not on the coin-in-hand. So I think they are only reflections.

Hard to see in the picture, doesn't look like a split serif to me. If it is it's probably too minor to list. Not many late 70s rpms.

It is a broken punch. Many dies from that year looked like that.

Yep, broken punch. That one had me fooled too when I found my first one. This is quite common on the 1979-D's.
