I've been slowly progressing towards 200 countries for a while now. Went to a coin show last weekend and was able to get a boost because people had inventory I hadn't got my grubby hands on yet. My Aruba uncirculated set put me at 201 countries, with 1189 different types. All in 2x2 holders, labeled and cataloged. Much better than my "pile of coins" days. That is counting Indian Princely States as "one country" too. Basically if it has an entry in Krause I count it. Here are some highlights coins, that put me over the goal. I got more commemorative coins than I usually do. The pics aren't the best but I though it deserved at least some documentation. Ascension Island 2001 50 Pence Democratic Replublic of the Congo 2002 10 Francs Laos 1999 3000 Kip Mauritius Niue Island An one I am especially proud of, Tonkin, 1905.

congratz!
when I hit 125 I thought that was it, 150 seemed so far away. chipped away at it slowly and couldn't believe it when I finally broke 200 (greendland was my 200th)
it is quite a milestone!

allranger- Congrats- must be a good feeling! I'm inching towards a milestone myself (my 12,000th coin- only 38 more to go!)- I know exactly what it feels like to go grubbing around for something you don't already have!
Are you collecting just one example per type per country? Do you have a grade cut off (i.e. nothing below XF)? I can't say it's the smartest thing to do, but I collect one of each variety of each year of each type of each country (that is, one of just about everything!), with little focus on country or grade (of course I'll swap out something I already have if I come across a better example cheaply enough). The plus side is I'm always learning new regions/history and rarely walk away from a coin shop empty handed. The down side is that the executors of my estate will have to wade through piles of nearly worthless coins to find the 1% worth anything!
cheers, tbg

thebuggy: I have what I have roughly called a world type collection, one of each variety. I don't collect by years, although if there are low mintage years I'll pick those up if I get a chance. I try to go for key dates when I get a chance. Most of my coins are XF or better. I try to get the best I can find, but a lot of my older coins have honest wear on them, but I am fine with that.

I'm the same, I like to collect anything, generally modern though, old chinese coins with no image on them don't really appeal to me. I'm lucky in that I can basically choose a country and go live there, hence I have big collections from these countries, and when I travel I try and pick up as many coins as possible, last place was Sweden and Norway and got a few cois from circulation to add to the set. Hope to go around Africa for 6 months next year, though they don't seem too big on coins.
