Hello,
Does anybody out there know of any way of distinguishing between the different mints that produce Israeli coins some years? For example, in 1988 the new shekel has a (j) and a (u) mint listed in the SToWC. Does anybody have any idea how to distinguish the coins from one mint versus another?
Hoping someone is aware of a guide "out there,"
Bruce

My older version of Krause says for 1988 new sheqels, "Struck at Jerusalem and Utrecht mints", but doesn;t give ant way to differentiate them. It's entirely possible there is no actual way to tell the difference, or perhaps it requires a close comparison of suble differences in the dies, rather than an overt mintmark or privy mark.

I believe there is a O on the ones minted in Ottawa Mint.

Thanks, Richard. Unfortunately, I don't think that the others are nearly as obvious....

Even that doesn't appear to work consistently. In 1992 it appears there were 3 different mint sources, with (o) (Ottawa?) being the most common. I just looked at a bunch of 1992s and not a single one had an o like the one in your photo. What year was that one? I'm beginning to think that Sap may be right. Too bad we don't have any Israeli numismatists on this forum to help out....

I see the o in Richard's photo on the 2000 coins. They may not even be minted in Ottawa. The SCoWC lists the mint as (wg). That would seem to be an odd designation to use for Ottawa.

Any chance you can contact Angielczyk and ask him to take a look at this thread and/or contact me? He is the only Israeli member with a decent number of posts who has posted in the past week. Thanks!

I am not an expert on mint marks but I can let you know the following:
For : Prooflike coin â€" Star of David. Silver and Gold Proof coins â€" Hebrew letter "mem" below the face value
I also know that the Israeli FAO 50th anniversary coins in 1995 were produced by the Finnish mint. Other commemorative coins have been produced in Munich, Paris and Jerusalem
I will try and find more information from sources at the Bank of Israel

Thanks for the help, my coincommunity friends! Angielczyk, I am mostly interested in the circulation coins (especially 1 new shekel coins). I would be very interested if you found out anything from your "sources at the Bank of Israel."
