I recently purchased a slabbed and professionally graded 1659 Lion Daalder of the Netherlands (Gelderland) from a reputable dealer. The coin appears to be well struck except for the date. The "16" is strong, the "9" weak, and the "5" is missing. In its stead there appears to be some mark or symbol (like an asterisk). Should the full date (1659) be clear, or was some symbol substituted for a numeral in the date on these coins? Is seems strange that the coin appears to be well struck except for the number 5 in the date. Thanks.

I don't have a book yet for that era so do you have a pic of the coin and a close up of the date. Also what was the company that slabbed the coin?

The slabbing company is PCl. I bought the coin as a Buy-It-Now on ebay from ebwcoins [ernie] who is a "power seller" with 99.9 percent positive feedback. I've purchased many coins from him. It was the excitement of seeing a Lion Daalder -- a seldom-offered coin I need for my colonial collection -- that caused me to buy it before taking a good look at the picture. I once own a similar piece dated 1648, but the entire date (each numeral) was visible. Under the magnifying glass, it appears that the 5 in the date was replaced by some unidentifiable symbol. The legend is clear and there is detail on the devices. I do not believe that that one part of the coin was worn off. It may have been caused by a defective die; but then, how did the grading company determine the date was 1659, as opposed or 1629 or any other year?

Here be your coin so others can check it out. I can see how they got a 59 from that and to the left of the 5 it does appear to be a defect in the die.

I did my best at a close up of the date with a drawing over the numbers.

That is EXACTLY my coin! You must have gotten the pic from my feedback to ebwcoins --- a lot of work. Thank you very much!

I examined another Lion Dollar dated 1645 on ebay. The figure 5 was apparently made with a 45-degree slash with a comma-like tail below it /
)
It appears that the top part of the five is present, but the bottom part did not strike up from a defective die. These coins frequently have wavy planchets and are poorly struck.
