I have been admiring all the Australian coins ever since I started coming to the forum. About 2 weeks ago I made my first purchase, a 1985 proof set. The set came in the mail yesterday, they look even better in person.

I'm hoping the addiction part will hold off until I finish my US type set. Seems like the more I hang out here the more coins I need.

coin collecting they said is like treasure hunting. when you bought described good coin but found out it's not, you've found a junk but when you bought a coin you expected as described but found out it's a lot better, you've found a gold!

trdhrdr007, 1985 is as good a year as any to start, and has some interesting features. Your set will have seven coins. The $1 was only introduced in 1984, and was not included in the 1984 set. So, 1985 was the first seeven-coin set. Since then, a $2 coin has been introduced; and the one- and two-cent coins were taken out of circulation. 1985 was also the first year of a new portrait of the Queen: type 1 1953~64 type 2 1966~84 type 3 1985 ~ ?, but which has been superceded. and I'm not sure if the current obverse is generally regarded as type 4 or 5. Next, you might like to start collecting the various 20-cent, 50-cent, and $1 commemoratives. But beware: once you get into pre-decimals Aussie coins (1910~1964), you are beyond redemption ... Here they are: Type 1 obverse 1953-1964 Type 2 obverse 1966-1984 Type 3 obverse 1985-1998 Type 4 obverse 1998-2007 Type 5 obverse 2000 (Royal Visit 50 cent)
There are also some variations to the obverse images over the years - lines added here or removed there.

I had been fascinated with the reverse designs of ya'lls coins ever since I came to the forum, & had been looking for quite a while for a proof set on ebay. I got the 1985 set because it met my two criteria....it was located in the states & the price was right. So far I have been able to resist the force, but the pull is strong.
