@Bama well said. I had actually bookmarked that place myself as another place to check for things, since hearing this though I've removed it.
The worst part of all of it is just how little it was over. He probably bought that coin for about that much and wouldnt have lost much if anything, but going back on a sale says a lot about him as a seller.

This has been interesting to read and learn the results. What this dealer has done makes me sick. I say this because retail businesses have been my life since college. What this man has basically done is to say my mistake is your added cost. There have been several occasions over the past few decades that I have made a similar mistake, whether it was a print add radio or TV. Our mistakes were on a larger scale than this, misprinted pricing in the paper. We honored each individual that came in for the printed price. The mistake was the fault of the adverts print up staff in the paper. They rembursed our add cost which was less than 40% of the sales amount we lost. We HONORED every sale at the misprinted price, no questions asked. His coin site is MUCH easier to monitor and HE is the one listing the pricing. It angers me because this happens all to often and we are ALWAYS expected to bow down. We explained this to many of the new customers that came in because of the mistake and you know what.....they remained loyal customers from then on. I'm not equating this example as the same as ours, but ABSOLUTELY he should have honored what HE listed the coin for. Period. You accept the loss for your own lack of attention and go on. I for one would me much more impressed and loyal to his business by accepting his fault and honoring the price. "Bait and Switch" is ALIVE AND VERY WELL as all of us know from not just our hobby here but in everyday life, sad as it is. Sorry for the rant but this hits home for us on many different levels.

Grancap... it's people like you that create a market place where people feel they are treated fairly and get service. I want to buy things I want/need from people like you.
When you spend your money, it's very similar to casting a vote. Every dollar you spend tells a business that they're doing the right things to serve their customers. When a business doesn't do those things, they lose the opportunity to gain the trust of that customer and anyone else that that person comes into contact with. Word of mouth is powerful positively and negatively. Having grown-up in a family business, I recognize the importance of relationships with customers, even internet customers. When you treat people fairly, they will respect you and come back. Whether their experience is positive or negative, customers are very likely to tell their friends about it.
I have returned the email to Ron from Bob Paul Rare Coins. I gave him a link to this thread and asked if he would like to share his opinion. This may be an opportunity for him, or us to see this situation in a different light. I hope he takes the time to read these comments and to is willing to provide his perspective. I honestly don't believe there was any intent to deceive or to create acrimony. I think this was a situation that wasn't dealt with correctly...

Bama, Thank you. I truly hope he does decide to join and write on this topic, but I do not really expect him to. Somewhere along the line, relationships in doing business has changed. Not everywhere, but we have all seen many changes over the years. The internet companies and particularly ebay has grown about as impersonal as it can be. I go to my favorite LCS not because he is the lowest priced, but I am treated like a "valued" customer. Bama, you know what this means with your background in family business as well as I do. We all look on ebay, and it has occurred to me that every time I'm looking at a coin I'm hoping that I'm not being naive or "taken" by the seller. I've looked at "bob's" website and it appears that he runs an reputable business, at least that is what I can tell reading descriptions and the way he lists his items. I have learned and read that CCF has a very larger following as well as collectors who have put a very large investment in their collections. If I owned a coin shop/company I would be on this site continually, I would advertise here and try to add to my knowledge not only of the coins but the possible customers themselves. I don't want to give the impression that my business practices were "holier than thou" but I have and still believe that the best way to run any company is to remember who is KEEPING you in business. There are MANY corporations that sadly, do not remember that anymore....

Update....
I sent the invitation to join the discussion to Ron via email yesterday. I don't think he'll be joining us. He sent the email back to me very quickly with no text, just "Second Request: Order from Bob Paul Rare Coins " in the email header.

Bama, I was hopeful but thought this would be the outcome. I was hoping as much as you he would join here because that would have definitely swayed my thoughts or ideas on his company. Sadly it seems that he like so many just keep on operating their version of "business as usual" and thinking there will always be more customers along the line. If he even would come on just to view CCF he would come to the understanding of the sheer volume of collectors here. You can look through posts to see how unbelievable some of the collections from members here are. I look through some of them and can only dream of buying, and my collection is not small by any means, but now his company is just another that I will check off my list....sad. There is only ONE LCS in my area that I think does business honestly, but unfortunately he seems to be going more towards bullion or "junk" rolls of silver coins and modern ASE's than higher grade "collectibles".

Honestly I think him not coming was the smartest thing he could do. He didnt honour a completed sale over 32 dollars, theres really nothing left to say. At this point hoping it dies off on its own quickly and people forget is about the best thing he could do instead of dragging it out. Even if he came and offered the coin at the list price it would save face a little bit, but it would still be clear it was only happening because of the fear he just lost a bunch of potential online customers from the forum and probably wouldnt hesitate to do what he did again if the same situation arises. The beds kind of already made on that one. Quote: but unfortunately he seems to be going more towards bullion or "junk" rolls of silver coins Dont underestimate the junk silver rolls if he doesn't search them closely, never know what you could pull from there

Basebal, believe me I DON'T underestimate the rolls people bring in to him to sell. I was in there 3 weeks ago buying some graded coins a man brought in to sell, which I've posted about. He brought in 8 rolls of Washington pre 65 quarters, I offered to buy a roll then and there. He opened one of the rolls with us both there, told him $125 which the man seemed happy with. Paid him for the 8 rolls, man then left. I know this customer, lives near my mother and in his 80's. He only will sell to this store, anyway. The store would not sell me anything he brought in. He always says they will be available for sale in a few days. He goes through every coin with a fine toothed comb. He if VERY familiar with all varieties. I know I saw '34d and '36d's in the one roll I looked at him opening. To his credit he knows what he can make more on, anyway does not allow me to buy them until he searches completely and then will only sell AG to F for 12 or 13x face. I feel like calling this customer who I've known for years but have never done so because he WANTS only to deal with this LCS. Trust me, knowing what this man has I would have bought every roll then and there with whatever margin the LCS would have felt fine with at that time, such is life.. I won't go behind the LCS back, maybe I'm naive but I just don't think that is the way to do things in this case. P.S. I believe that only a few quarters in that one roll were lower than VF grade. This man did not collect for the sake of just hoarding silver coins.

I am with basebal21 on this one. As far as I am concerned his store does not exist to me.
I don't think it was wrong to invite him to the thread if for nothing else than him to see how "customers" think. Hopefully, for his sake, he will learn from his mistake.

Grancap all I can say is at the thought of getting a 32 d that way. I dont think thered be any harm in making him an offer if the situation arose especially if you know the guy. If your doing an album and hoping to fill holes with it or just really like washingtons its hard to blame you for asking

Well... although Ron from Bob Paul Rare Coins didn't post here, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume he wanted to check-out the discussion. Perhaps that will be enough of a learning lesson. I did notice that that shop charges a 5% restocking fee for returned merchandise, I wonder if they offer a 5% return for customers when they don't fill an order that's been accepted...? Okay, that was a rhetorical question.

Bama do they offer free shipping? If theres free shipping a restocking fee is perfectly reasonable, if not thats weak considering they sell off their own site and not ebay with listing fees

The shipping cost for the Liberty Half that I ordered was $6.

Just got around to checking this thread and WOW. I am sorry for the trouble BamaBlue. I too will not be even looking at that site anymore. I had smooth transactions with them before - and at decent pricepoints so I thought it was a legit listing! Reneging like that is plain awful! And it had been up for at least 5 days before I mentioned it so it wasn't some brand new listing! The 2am excuse is plain BULLPUCKY. I don't think it was a bait&switch issue, but he should have eaten it and learned his lesson if it was a type-o and he meant something else? 98? 108? Anyway, sorry it was a bad lead after all!
