I assume you mean for feedback?
Dock a star for shipping time. I dont really believe in negative feedback unless the item was not as described, he was a jerk about reasonable things, or you never get it ect. Others will probably say to be harsher with the feedback.
This is all assuming you do actually get it. If it doesn't show up this time Id open a case or just tell him to refund the money as I would just want to be done with it at that point.

He'll getpositive feedback..nice guy. To be fair, postage allowed for a pretty good margin, but hes still getting pretty low shipping time.

Shipping is a real bear on ebay... generally unless it takes more than 3 weeks - I don't get overly excited. I don't dock anyone for shipping if they are low priced on it. If the item is what you expected - then I wouldn't worry about it too much. I've encountered people who have other things going on in their lives, and I do as well... as long as I get what I bought - I seldom worry about it being shipped instantly.

Wow you guys are lenient. I sell on ebay and always have my stuff out same or next day. ebay allows you to put a handling time in the settings when you list the item. If something were to get in the way of my normal service I would message the buyer ASAP. I've even apologized when the DC# wasn't scanned by my PO. It's common courtesy to communicate when things go wrong and I don't understand why people think they can sell and take money from people and then get around to sending it when they feel like it. When I buy, unless there is handling time stated on the auction or specifics about turnaround time in the listing, I give 5 star for sending same or next business day, 4 star for more than 2 business days, and 3 star for 3-4 business days unless they communicated to me proactively. I too don't believe in giving unwarranted negatives but the 5 star system helps differentiate the good sellers from the so so ones.

What about somebody that charges three bucks for shipping but when you get it, it came in a regular letter size envelope with one stamp ? A guy just shipped me a Kennedy half that way. The same day I also got a Lincoln rpm in a 2x2 shipped in a letter sized envelope, single stamp with 20 cent postage due. He felt put out that I complained and has blocked me from bidding on his stuff. I still have feedback left to give for him and I haven't decided what I'll give him.

^ People can overcharge for shipping, sure, but he overreacted and I'd ding him a bit for that.

Jnorland, life happens sometimes and remember that anything not 5 stars penalizes sellers on ebay. I agree with doug as long as its in a reasonable time I dont ding. Most people like to have the PO scan things in in front of them instead of wonder what will happen to it if they drop it off at night

Yes, "life happens" but communication is key and costs nothing. If I see my package not get scanned for some reason, I assure the buyer it went in and it is usually scanned on the other side. By not saying anything, you might as well have "forgot" to send it like the OP's seller. As for shipping cost, that 5 star rating is specifically to deal with those trying to make extra $ off of shipping. Ding them. If you prefer a more casual "whenever" type of selling scenario, I suggest selling locally like on Craigslist or putting a disclaimer in your listings. There are too many people essentially getting payday loans using Paypal on both sides. BTW, putting 3 or 4 stars rarely affects anything on ebay. Putting 1 or 2 stars does. If you are earning this low as a seller, you probably shouldn't be selling on ebay. My Two Cents.

Keep in mind, one of the protections ebay has in place for sellers is that 1 or 2-star ratings aren't allowed to stick unless a seller gets more than one of them in a given period (duration at ebay's discretion; I don't know how long that is).

4 and especially 3 can take your discount away. Its really not anything to do with a casual approach, its just that things get in the way and not everyone is a professional ebay seller. People work, people get sick, people have emergencies that can tie them up for a day or two, I agree communication is ideal. My point though is every situation should be judged independently, one size fit all approaches are never the best way to handle anything. I dont believe in dinging people because they didnt meet a set of criteria I have, if they forget or take excessive time yes but if you have the package within a week or two its no big deal. Most large companies ship at that rate and charge more to do so As for shipping costs what they charge is clearly stated. The only time shipping cost should be dinged is if they change different than what was stated or they list priority mail/expedited and send it first class. When you buy the item youve agreed to the listed costs as long as its sent at the service level stated theyve fulfilled their end of the shipping cost. If they want to charge 3 dollars and send it with a 45 cent stamp they can do so, just like buyers who want to be a problem can claim they never got it and theres nothing they can do for trying to save a dollar or two and not using tracking.

I also agree with jnorlund. Just common courtesy to send ASAP or as described in your ad, and if you cannot, let the buyer know. Too many people have the "all about me" attitude.

If I pay three dollars for shipping they better dang well take care of my coin and not just throw it in regular envelope with the Indian Head cent sticking half out when I receive it. I expect someone to at least put some effort into shipping with my three dollars. A single stamp and envelope is taking advantage, no if ands or buts.

If you say it costs $x.xx for shipping, I believe you. You can send a coin or a card in a big box if you want all wrapped up and safe to protect it, it's your choice and I agree to the cost when I buy. However, if it comes to me and it clearly cost you far less than you charged me and you didn't have a handling charge in the listing, you are getting dinged. I will absolutely look up PO desk/retail costs and anything you added like insurance or DC to make sure I'm not wrong. After that, if there is a descrepancy greater than say $.50-1.00, you are getting dinged. That is just a shady way to make profit extra, IMO. The worst is when they charge like $5-6 for an easy $2 item and it isn't even padded. The bottom line is this, ebay has the stars defined very clearly in the description, some use them as described and some just default to 5 star as long as it eventually arrives. If you go 5 star as default all the time to be nice, you keep bad sellers going. There are many different ways "casual" sellers can get rid of their stuff. The money is delivered immediately so sending your item should be a priority.
