I posted this junk-bin find awhile back and most comments agreed it was likely the key-date 1923-S. I finally sent it to ANACS and was happy to learn they also agreed. I was surprised that they deemed it to be corroded however. Surfaces look OK to me, with appropriate color and marks for the level of wear.

I sent in another SLQ with an even weaker date that I hoped would turn out to be a '23-S. The final digit was almost invisible but it looked like a 3 to me. To my surprise ANACS decided it was a 1924-S and gave it a problem-free GD-6 grade. I'll probably put both coins on ebay and see what kind of interest they generate.

Nice . I don't think you will have a problem finding a new home for the 1923 s on ebay. Congrats!
Rest in Peace

with CoinsKelly. The 23-S will generate some interest on the bay for sure.

Now these are examples of coins I would not crack out.
Something you will almost never hear from me.

I'm curious how this was verified. Is it possible to read the date under high magnification, perhaps different lighting or lighting angles, or is there something else distinctive about a 1923 SLQ that is the giveaway? I'd be interested if anyone has any tips for dating "dateless" coins (I'm lookin' at you, shield nickles).

All they would need to see are faint remnants of a 3.
High power magnification and lighting.

Ah, I guess that makes sense! No other SLQs were minted in any other years ending with "3". Same story for the low-ball Peace dollar with the "8" in the other thread: it has to be a 1928--too bad no mint mark was identifiable.

In the case of a 1928 Peace, having no mint mark is a good thing

Of course, the location where any mint mark would have been is so far gone, I'd think there's no way to say whether or not it was or wasn't there--quite an odd situation really!

It doesn't appear corroded. Maybe environmental damage but even it doesn't look that bad. I guess the results weren't too bad.
