I've been interested now in obtaining true unopened rolls of 1972 cents. Are the rolls pictured actual mint wrapped or are they wrapped by someone in their home. Since I don't know what a mint wrapped 1972 penny roll looks like, I figured maybe some of you do. If you can point me in the right diection I would very much appreciate it!

I am sure the experts will jump on me if I am wrong. but it is my understanding that the mint did not roll cents they sent them out in $50 bags to the Fed. They were then distributed to various banks. they were either wrapped at the banks or at the federal reserve. So the only rolled cents you will see will not have been rolled by the mint.

I'm sure there are original unopened rolls of Cents out there. You and I will never know for sure, because there's no way to prove it. I know Richard's words are true for the present and recent past; that far back, I'm unsure. Either way, it's literally not possible to tell the difference between a roll created that long ago and one made last weekend. It is just as easy to fake "age" in paper as it is to preserve it looking new for 35 years.

hmmm so odds of me actually getting lucky and unwrapping one of those rolls and finding me a nice DDO in there is close to 0. Thanks for the info!

It's a standard shotgun roll that anyone with plastic crimper can make their own.

Also when doing ebay searches make sure you enter this as a search word " -unsearched ". it will filter out all the garbage auctions that are trying to make you believe you are getting a great deal.

in my honest opinion there is no such thing as an un searched roll or bag of any key date coin such as the 72. I was around in the 70's and I think that them rolls with the red lines on them are the (not new) but newer rolls. if I am correct in 72 the rolls were all one color. red for cents. and on these rolls from the auction you provided if you look close you will see that the rolls have been opened and the pushed back in to appear sealed.

I have some unsearched memorial rolls. These roll paper is white with red stripes. I don't have any 1972, at least I don't think so. I have so many.

So the mint placed 1972 memorial cents in a bag without rolls? Scratchy Scratchy anyone? That'd make it impossible to find a MS-65+ that's not proof and therforce cause MS-65 to skyrocket. The current value books state otherwise for the price of a MS-65+ 1972 Memorial cent. hehe, this will take research.
