Yesterday I bought a 5oz Mexican silver bullion coin from their "Pre-Columbian" series (1998). It came in its original packaging. However said packaging is nothing more than a cheap thin plastic envelope that is looking pretty ratty, and has a small hole in it. I really detracts from the eye appeal if you ask me.
My question is: Would it be a mistake if I were to remove the packaging?

Not sure, but I bought five 5 oz Libertads and they came in a plastic 5 slot coin holder made just for 5 coins, I didnt know that when I ordered them , I am assuming they come direct from the mint like that. I will post it once I get a few pics shot. Oh I found one online: http://www.apmex.com/Product/69845/...ntainer.aspx

If you're talking about special, limited edition "collectors" coins that sell at a high premium, like proof ASE coins put out by the U.S. Mint, I'd say that the Original Government Packaging (OGP) definitely make a difference. If you're talking about bullion coins that are produced in the millions and sell at or near spot value, on the other hand, I sincerely doubt having the OGP makes any difference whatsoever.

The coin speaks for itself. While many of the special edition coins and sets from the Casa de Moneda come in special holders or very collectible wooden boxes, the OPG plastic is not collectible. Except for a few die hard " must be all original " collectors, taking it out of the ratty plastic will not lower the value to any significant degree.
And if you can put it in a 5oz airtite, it might actually keep it nicer. I collect 5, 2 and 1oz Libertads, and have never seen any premium added to coins in the original plastic, boxes definitely, plastic no.

I bought the coin for $140, which is about $5 over spot I believe, so I did pay a premium for it, but not a huge one. I believe the mintage for this coin is about 5600.

Nice score Those coins are really nice, and a 5oz coin is always impressive. Most of the ones that I have seen go for $190-$200

Thanks deco! I love high relief and its sheer size compared to the Maple Leafs and ASLs that make up the rest of my bullion stash.

I think it depends. I know one large dealer who won't buy Pandas unless they are in origianl mint capsules. I guess they can't resell them on the internet and their maybe some concern about counterfeits.
