Poll Question
Hi folks!

There has been a fair bit of discussion lately on various threads about how many different coins the mint issues during a year.

The number of coins released by the mint has increased over the years, and for 2013 the RCM has indicated that it plans to issue over 200.

Some of you seem to care, and others don't...

I thought it might be interesting to poll the members here, to see what you think.

Please feel free to explain your answer on this thread. Thanks for your participation!

POLL QUESTION:

With regard to future Royal Canadian Mint coin issues, do you think the increasing number of different coins in a given year will have an adverse effect, a positive effect, or no effect at all on the coin collecting hobby?

Note: Answers are listed in alpha order.

Poll Choices
 Adverse effect
 No effect at all
 Positive effect

Everybody has different tastes there are so many coins I would not even think twice about buying so why would I care if they are released but then there are people that will like those coins and not like the coins I am interested to each his/her own. The mint is only trying to make coins that appeal to the different types of collectors there is no problem with that you don't have to buy everything they are selling.

The fact of releasing so many coins will obligate collectors to focus their collections, choose what kind of coins they really like and not buy all stuff.

And the flippers will have to "predict" what are the hot coins because if not, they will get stocked with coins that won't be able to sell.
Rest in Peace

I'm still a fan of truly 'Commemorative' coins. Coins that mark an anniversary of something but only of an annual nature. I agree with 1912-2012 for the Titanic, I don't agree with a coin for April the 15th every year for the Titanic.

Wild life coins are nice - I enjoy them, but does every animal in the world need a coin issued every year? Come on now with the Beavers and Wolves and Bison already - add to it 12 years of Zodiac Animals!

Queen's Coronation - pick one! Come on why are there so many issues for this - she was only coronated (is that a word?) once.

If there is 5 nice sized gold coins every year, that would be enough, 25 to 50 silver coins would also do me nicely, and come on - 3 sets - Proof, Specimen, and Uncirculated - should be enough. Instead we have every sports team ever to lace up get's their own set with special quarter.

I say Enough already - picking and choosing 1 or 2 from each issue this year will be enough for my compulsion - the rest - can go to remelt.

More coins means they can appeal to different audiences and attract more people to collecting.
I don't think any other mint has so many coins specifically directed at females and children. That's all positive for the hobby.

The marketing, gimmicks and dilution might turn many folks off of RCM products eventually, but they'll find other coins to collect.

The only thing messing with this hobby is the ridiculous prices the mint is selling them at now and nothing else!

If you are talking about coin collecting as a whole, then there will not be an effect. NCLT are not the only coins you can collect, and as I am sure you know from this forum, many people do not collect NCLT.

The mint is in the business of not producing our currency but also making a profit. I think it's great that the mint is appealing to all types of collectors. Not everyone will buy every coin issued. There is something for everyone. That's the great news.

Good discussion so far, gentlemen.

Do any of you ladies out there care to offer your opinions?

I can see there are good reasons to support your differing points of view.

Also Noah, I should have specified "NCLT coin collecting" in the question to avoid any confusion.

In most situations, variety is great. The sheer options available to choose make it more alluring for every different type of collector.

Being somewhat new to NCLT collecting, it's nice to know I have options. As I generally lean more towards "prettier" coins, I like that the mint is offering flowers, and non-historical themed coins. Having said that, I'm starting to feel fatigued from the sheer number of releases. I know that I don't have to buy every coin, nor do I buy every coin. But I'm beginning to become overwhelmed and I almost feel like the RCM is saturating the market with too much availability. Whether that saturation will translate into a slow demise of the hobby, I'm not sure. I hope not. Sometimes, too much of a good thing gets stale and just becomes too much in the end.

I just know that my wallet needs a break and it's hard to anticipate and purchase accordingly based on a budget when you keep on seeing coins you might buy, but you hold out because there might be something better in the coming month(s). Or, you've bought too much at the beginning of the year and have to pass on other coins for the remaining eight months.

with all these new coins who knows, maybe the value of older issues 2011 and later will increase.

Noah, thanks for the link to that poll.

I missed seeing it completely at the time it was posted.

Must be my age:

The-Effect-Of-RCM-Future-Issues

The question is related to this poll although it's not quite the same thing. It's about about guessing the value (prices) of the older NCLT coins when the market is continually being "flooded" with new releases.

The comments make an interesting read. That poll is still open for votes and so far it appears that the pessimistic forecast is ahead.

, it was quite interesting to hear what some of the others had to say. Thought that ksimms3 would like to look at them as well.
