Found this coin in the middle of a field in Ohio in the mid 1960's I've been confused about what it is ever since. I've done research online but have yet to find a coin that matches either picture on my coin. Any ideas what it is? Maybe a fake? it feels extremely heavy like lead or even pure silver.... Thanks for the help!

This is supposed to be a Greek silver tetradrachm coin from Thrace circa 405-357 BC and similar to Sear #1568. It's interesting that you found it in a field in Ohio, if it were real that would be the find of a lifetime. Unless an ancient coin collector dropped it there years ago the Greeks never made it to North America, and sadly it's a fake.

It's an ancient Greek coin, or it's supposed to be one, anyway. The design is that used on silver coins from the city of Ainos, now known as Enez and situated in what is now European Turkey, right on the border with Greece. You can see a lot of coins with very similar designs to yours on the page for this city on Wildwinds.

Unfortunately, I'm seeing some signs that this coin might be fake. The large crack running above and through the goat, for example; such cracks are typically seen on cast fakes. And if you compare your coin to the ones with similar design on Wildwinds, genuine examples of this type tend to have very high relief; it could just be your picture, but the obverse portrait on yours looks very flay by comparison.

I am afraid it is a cast copy of a reproduction.

Here is a small image of one that was stamped with "COPY" on the rim.

These stamped copied were cast and "COPY" removed and were being sold as orginals through ebay from 2004 through 2006. The copies were being sold by a group of fakers that became known as "The Toronto Group" as they generally operated from Toronto. Many copies were made and distributed. Here is one of those cast copies that was sold back in 2005.

These coins share the same dies, same flan shape, same wear pattern etc. All these factors lead to the conclusion that it is a modern cast fake I am afraid.

Thanks for all the help guys! I had no idea what it was and I'm glad I finally found out. but I have to be honest, I was kinda disappointed when I found out it was a fake...I guess thats just life!

One more curious question....if I really did have the real thing, how much would a coin like this be worth now days?

Also if you follow Sap's link to WW and click on 'text' by an example like your coin sometimes there are sale figures there too.

Since the conclusion is it is a Fake, there is no need to bother yourself on this question.
