I'm thinking about joining PCGS to get some coins graded by them. Primarily one I hope gets "crossed over" at the same MS67 grade that NGC graded it - does a semi-low NGC cert number help my chances there?

But I also have 3-5 raws, or basement slabbed coins, I wouldn't mind getting PCGS graded as well. I take it the basment slabs count as raw to them and not "crossovers", correct?

I'm leaning to the 4-free lowest level as I don't have 8 to do and might be "stretching it" to get 6 thatg merit the cost.

My questions mainly are around the fees. Does the "voucher" just cover the $32 or will it cover the crossover $25 on that one coin I want to crossover?

Is Shipping and insurance always "on top" of the 4 free vouchers?

I take it doing all 4 at once is the best approach? To save shipping there and S&I back?

Thanks in advance! Zero experience on this and their website isn't clear on the freebies.

Don't forget that pcgs now charges a guarantee premium for successful crossover coins now.

GUARANTEE PREMIUM: The Guarantee Premium is equal to 1% of the value of the coin in its final grade. The value of the coin is determined as the higher of the Declared Value or the PCGS Price Guide value for that grade. The minimum amount for the Guarantee Premium is $5. PCGS reserves the right to make the final determination of the coin's value.

You can use the vouchers for the 32 or the modern service level. I'm not sure if they work for crossovers but what ever you use them for you have to use all in the same tier. For example your raw coins if all pre 64 would have to be in one and then the cross over would have to be its own order.

Yes you still have to pay for that even with a voucher.

Generally the more coins the cheaper the cost for each coin in terms of shipping. That certainly would be preferable to sending them in one at a time

I got this from the FAQ section on PCGS's site.

"What are the rules and regulations to use a Collectors Club voucher?
The Collectors Club voucher may be applied to either the Regular Standard or Regular Secure service. You may submit your coins for either Raw, Crossover or Regrade service. You cannot submit U.S. and World coins together and you cannot submit raw coins, Crossovers, or Regrades on the same submission form.
Voucher is not valid for Mint Errors, Special Issues, First Strike fees, Variety Attribution fees, Oversized Holder fees, Secure Crossover fees or coins valued over $3,000. Additional information may be located with the Submission Guidelines."

With the voucher, any unused submissions will be forfeited. So if you send in 3 coins for grading with a voucher for 4 submissions, you won't be able to use the 4th one at a later date. If you are planning on sending some raw an some to get crossed, the raw and the crossovers have to be on separate submissions in which, if I am not mistaken, you will be charged for return shipping and $8 handling fee for each submission. Multiple submissions can be sent to them in the same package.

If you have the voucher, I think the three options you have are:
1. Use the voucher and send 3 basement slabs with the NGC as a crossover but given the negative associations with basement slabbers, the grades of those coins may be slightly disappointing. PCGS doesn't seem to specify which 3rd party slabs are allowed so I am assuming any can be submitted as a crossover.
2. Use the voucher and send all 4 coins as raw including the NGC but given the grade, it sounds like it could be quite risky.
3. Send in 4 raw coins and use the voucher on that submission and send the NGC on a separate submission but the separate return shipping and $8 handling fees can add up.

This is assuming all the coins are U.S and the raw/basement slabbed coins cannot be submitted under the economy or modern tiers. You could consider submitting the coins through an authorized dealer if the membership route doesn't look attractive to you. Hope this helps and best of luck however you decide to proceed.

Thanks a lot, that helps me tremendously. Though finding out you cannot combine crossover and raws is a major wrinkle to my plans. I think I have two choices.

1. Crack the NNC/basement slab and submit that and 3 other raws, may crack another to make it raw as well, on one form using the 4 vouchers. Submit the NGC 67 on a separate form for crossover paying the 32+ for it stand-alone ( at least I could send all 5 to them at once ). I do not want to pay a crossover fee on the NNC/basement slab that is worthless anyway.

2. Wait until I have 4 "legit" slabbed coins that I want to crossover and only then sign up and do it. I "might" have 3 I'd consider but not at $57++ fees and s&h. Only the one is worth that to me right now.

What a racket they have going. If not for the "crossover" fee I'd be tempted to use my "snap together" Coin World slabs and send them in as "BuffalosRock grading service" crossovers. ;)

Dont forget to create a website and accept submissions too

I would highly recommend cracking out the basement slabbed coins instead of doing a cross over. Just seeing the basement slab will put them in the mindset that the coins are over graded and theyll look for any excuse to knock it down grades.

My advice would be to just bite the bullet and cross the single coin and then try and just buy ones already graded by pcgs to avoid that in the future since the cross over does seem to be more expensive than raw especially for modern coins.

I actually offered a very lowball offer on it and was shocked that it got accepted - thus why I have a NGC coin that I want to cross-over and it alone is worth the crossover fee. But I may wait as I am not sure about asking a dealer buddy to submit it for me.

I am pondering trying to send 3 others in for crossover. A $10 gold 1908 NM ANACS MS61 that is worthy, and another $10 gold 1912 NGC MS63 though that one really doesn't need to be so it is a major stretch and not worth the $ really.

The closest thing I could come to a 4th might be a basement slabbed 1924-S Peace dollar I have. Labelled MS66. They'd probably object to me sending it in with low insurance - and it'll probably get bagged anyway! It was a gift from a friend so I couldn't refuse it. So maybe it'll only crossover at 65. ;)
