I am debating on whether to get a 1983 or 2004 proof set. I am unsure of which one to buy. I would want 1983 for my aunts birth year and I would like 2004 because I loved that year. Which one do you think I should get?

The 1983 set is really pretty cheap. If I was doing it I'd go that route for a starter set. They really do look pretty nice as well.

I agree with Doug. You could start with the '83 and can purchase additional sets from this decade at lower pricing than the 2000's. I started out similarly with my family members, it's gives some more meaning to what you are collecting.

Do you think $8.00 for the 2004 proof set is a good deal?

I am not sure if this is right, but here's the quarters for 6 dollars.

The box will have wear and tear.

* I never bought a mint set and not even sure what you get or what they're called. If you meant the ten coins I'm sorry then. I gave you a link for quarters.

8s a good deal for the entire 2004 proof set. They probably sold for more than that from the mint

Issue price from the mint was $22.95 which shows why it is often not a good idea to buy proof sets directly from the mint. Buy for $23 and ten years later sell for 1/3 issue price.

frankly on further reflection that $8 price probably CAN'T be for a full proof set. The face value of the full set is $6.91 but if you can get a 14 coin set for $1.09 over face value seems like a no brainer.

I agree. It is probably missing the Statehood Quarters lens. However, a great price for the full set if complete.

I actually just looked these up on ebay out of curiosity and they consistently sell for 6-8 dollars when they do sell from the ones I saw, some got around 10. Definitely agree with condor that its a no brainer for 8, numismedia has it listed at 10 for what its worth

Red Book shows the 2004 11 piece set is valued at $12... a 1983 is listed at $6 and you can usually find them in that ball park with free shipping.

I stopped buying clad proofs several years ago - unless I get a really good deal on them.

My mistake I had looked up the 03 set, the 04 set goes from about 7-17 with a good number being between 10-14 and a numis price of 11.

Eleven coin set? Five dollar coins, five quarters, one half dollar, one dime, one nickel and one cent equals 11 coins?

Never mind, I was thinking of the four President dollars but they didn't start until 2007. That makes my earlier comment about $1.09 over face value incorrect as well.

I might have to buy one of them sets. I would crack them out though. ( just my opinion, don't do it unless you want to)
