I've got a 1891S Victoria Half Sovereign, Jubilee Head that is graded AU-50 by PCGS. The 2012 McDonald's values it at $4000. I would like to give a realistic value to it for my own valuation purposes. Like if I were to sell it today what I could expect to realistically get for it. Do any of you use a rough estimate of percentage of catalog value to value coins. Like if the catalog says $4000 do you use half or 3/4?

You can't translate the PCGS AU50 grade directly to the AU Australian grade listed in Macca's. PCGS AU50 is usually something around EF in Australian terms. It could be gVF right through to gEF. It's extremely unlikely to be an Aussie AU.

For insurance purposes I'd record the value at FULL catalogue value. It's that sort of price you're likely to pay to replace it so get the most you can for it.

Thanks Markn. OK, let me rephrase that. I have an extra fine now worth $1800. I don't care about the insurance, I just like to know approximate real value. If the catalog says 1800 is there a rough guide I can use to approximate what it would sell for on the street?

You're better off valuing PCGS graded coins using the Blue Sheet, the Blue Sheet values them in the numerical standard so there's no need for translating grades or taking percentages of the listed values. The 1891-S is listed at $440 in AU50 or $975 for the JEB type - these prices are what you would likely receive at auction for the coin.

You can value other PCGS graded coins from this form:
http://www.bluesheet.com.au/Certificates/
Just enter in the certificate number and it'll show you the value.
