It is in such unusually good shape for an '82-p (other than those few nicks) that I was wondering if I could get you all to give it a grade. All opinions are appreciated. Thanks! Edited by Sudz 05/23/2013 08:00 am

MS-63/64RD, will depend on luster....which I can't see in the photo. It looks to me a small date copper, one of the harder to find of the 82 series.

It has great luster which drew my attention to it in first place. It really is a pretty penny.

Just a couple stupid questions but is there wear across the lower part of the bust and hair? also it may be the pics but take a close look at some of the lettering in "States of America" is that doubling or just shadowing and/or angle of camera?

I would think AU 58 based on the wear all along the bottom of Lincolns suit and the bottom step (especially center to right) on the reverse.

Keep in mind, on this design the high points are in the bust/shoulder area and top of head. I've cracked open MANY fresh OBW rolls loaded with coins that are weakly struck there.....this is exactly how those look. It's what I call "scratchiness", best way I can think of describing it.
Also look at the hair at the top of the head, that is often flat from a weak strike. On the reverse below the memorial, you can see some planchet scratches there.

I found an example. Here's a 1991-D I pulled from an (expensive) OBW. Look at the bottom of the bust near the rim. That's not wear, that's how it was stuck.

Here's a great example, you can see the bust weakness and the hair at the top of the head. The head area can become very flat on a mint state coin. I seen it flat as low as the temple area.

BadThad, thanks for the great info. I appreciate you taking the time to educate me. Grading coins properly is still one of the hardest things for me to do. I need all the lessons I can get. Thanks again. Also, it was asked earlier in this thread about possible doubling: it's just the angle of the light coupled with a little MD.

Sure, no prob.
I don't see any indication of a doubled die. You'd see some notching in the devices....google it.

Thank you BadThad, I was hoping you would explain what I was seeing. I really thought I was wrong because you had already called the grade, but I just had to say what I saw and now I know more
