rhino8080- I'm no expert but I'm not confident it is genuine. IMO the denticles/rim are off along with the lettering and date which are too thick (compared to examples located on Heritage Auctions site). There also appears to be thin line under the date near the rim which could be evidence that it is a cast copy. Again... I'm no expert and other members better versed will chime in I'm sure.
BTW... Welcome!

The local coin shop offered me $400 and said that it was genuine. The date looks thinner in person for some reason. Not sure but thanks for your reply.

Looks like counterfeit to me. Hair is wrong, looks like she's had breast implants, LIBERTY too thick, etc. Hope I'm wrong. Compare it to pictures of other 1805 draped bust dimes on PCGS Coin Facts. Looks very different.

UGGGHH. I hate to believe it but I agree. Thank you both. Maybe I should have taken the $400 from the coin shop.

The letters "LIB" in LIBERTY are much smaller than the letters "ERTY".

Quote: looks like she's had breast implants Lol, too funny, it really does... But as well as the other comments unfortunately true. I'd have to say I agree, it looks off compared to other photos and as mentioned "Lib" is smaller than "erty". Just for good measure could you post a reverse pic? And solely out of curiosity where did you find it? I'd definitely head back to the shop and sell it for $400, lol, if they think its genuine then let them deal with it. Tell them you have your doubts but will sell it. *edit* I'm sorry, where are my manors, !

Welcome rhino8080!
I agree with the others, but am surprised no one asked...what is the blemish behind her head?

OK pulled out the book and it is definitely a fake. There was only one obverse die for 1805 and this isn't it. The spacing of LIBERTY is wrong, the position of the hair waves below E and R are wrong (For example the wave under the R should be right of the center of the letter, not below the upright of the letter.). Spacing of the date is wrong, star 8 should point at the body of the Y above the foot not at the end of the foot.

The blemish could be a shot from a BB gun, maybe someone found out it was fake and shot it. Only speculation though, but I do remember a topic or two with people shooting fakes. And welcome to the forum rhino8080!

I agree with fake. It really does like she had breast implant.

Unfortunately it's a fake. As to when it was made and when it was PMD'd is another question. Square nail holes were common back in the 1800's. Not sure when the transition to round nails occurred. ACE Had to have been around my 1917. The square almost hole is similar to the one on my 1917 type 1 SLQ
