I'm reluctant to pull the trigger on purchasing a coin from a site that has 5 of the same date/TPG/grade such that the pic they show isn't necessarily the coin you'll get. I called and they assured me all are non-toned and in-sequence with the one pictured and just as good.

So were they from the same roll perhaps?

I see this on ebay some too where someone will have 10 or even 20 of the same coin for sale ( even MS65 or MS66 coins ). I've never been willing to risk it.

Plus it seems like it may de-value the coin if one seller has that many - and is trying to unload them so they are priced reasonable to boot.

Any experience with these situations? Ever get sent a clunker?

Its all going to depend on the seller. Coins that get listed like that arent high end coins so theres no need to worry about it being devalued by too many listed, thats a good thing for you since people will pay more if its the only one listed at the time.

It is what it is though. Some sellers will send you pics of one, some will let you ask for the one in the photo some say you get what you get. You can usually return it if you want especially on ebay if they say it isn't toned and it is.

I have always followed the rule of, " if they can't be bothered to to go the extra mile to take pictures of each coin being offered, how far do you think they are going to go for you , if you are not satisfied with the coin you receive? "

If I can't see obverse and reverse of any coin I am thinking of buying, then I don't buy it. No matter how much I want it.

I am looking for a 1909 V.D.B. PCGS MS64 or 65 Red and there is one seller that I am watching who seems to have sent in an UNC roll in to PCGS since he has over 50 combined of the 64 & 65 Red. More than likely the seller places the best image and says that they are all about the same and you may or may not receive the coin depicted. I have asked for some specific images so that I could choose from...I have not heard from him/her again.

Moving on.

Having that many of similar date/grade would be an absolute non-event if you were browsing the bourse at a coin show. It's entirely in character for many dealers, an accepted business model. Some bring that business model online, through long habit and perhaps a bit of ignorance as regards usual online practice.

Don't forget, there are plenty of "collectors" out there for whom this wouldn't be a problem. They're not collecting coins, they're collecting "slabs of a certain grade carrying a specific related value."

IMHO... the multiple pictures of each coin is irrelevant for multiple TPG coins from the same grading service. The only issue would be whether there is toning. As has been mentioned many, many times, some people love toned coins others don't. That would be the only discriminator in my mind.

I've been with that thought process denco7, but one I am considering is a MS67FB merc dime and another I'm eyeing is a MS65 walker. I've seen sellers at shows with like 50 ANACS modern double-die pennies they want to sell - so they obviously bought a roll and sent them in to grade.

I just don't like the principle of volume "slab selling" like this over listing coins as unique collectibles. WHich is what SsuperDdave is talking about. Some of the "gold bullion" types treat many gold coins as just bullion-like as well. I don't know that I trust them really! This "they all look alike" attitude irks me some, IOW.
Rest in Peace
