You're paid a visit by the Coin Fairy this weekend. While you're sleeping she sneaks in and puts an envelope under your pillow. In it is $20,000 cash and a note. The note reads:

I have given you this money to spend on coins, any coins you wish. The only rule is that you can not spend it on anything else. If you do, you'll immediately be turned into a frog. Have fun with your coins (that's for David Hall).

So...

How would you spend the money?

One monster coin from the next Heritage auction?

Several really, really nice coins off ebay?

Lots of vf/xl type coins from your local dealer?

Nothing but Morgans?

2,000,000 current date circulated lincolns at face value?

Other?

Please tell us what you'd do.

Well being that the Coin Fairy did not say what I had to do with the coins that I bought with the money, I would get it all in $1 coins thus fulfilling the terms of the note and then use those along with other funds to pay cash for a new truck.

I would get a confederate half dollar, and do a complete set of 1860-O coins hopefully all MS quality. If by chance I had any money left over I would do another set of circulated 1860-O coins. All the coins could be graded of course and I would probably sleep with them at night I would be so happy

First off, I'd finally be able to afford to buy a Dansco 7070 album off ebay. Then I'd start filling said album, starting with some GOLD!

Similar to TJB17, I would complete my 7070 in nice quality grades, as well as buy the additional gold page and fill er up!

I'd finish every Canadian dateset. $20,000 should be enough for every issue in circulated grades (not counting all those Victoria varieties, yikes).

I like your line of thinking here, Tim!

At least a portion would go to making the folowing aquasitions:
1) A common St. Gaudans Double eagle for around spot
2) A 1876 S Trade dollar
3) some more 1800's coins from my want list, and few that arent.
4) A few proof 'Roo's and a '94 or '96 CSM
5) a proof ASE or two

The rest, I do like Tim: "buy" $1 coins and spend them on things I need.

1) Lots of cheap stuff... ridiculous lots of cheap stuff, some might go for resale later (and by "cheap", I mean the several-coins-per-buck sort of cheap - anything above $1 isn't cheap enough unless silver)
2) Buying some small change at shops (ideally: numismatic shops - I know a few of these), as in asking them to change a $100 bill into coins... that counts as spending on coins right? and if it's actually denominated in dollars I could just exchange it for 2500 rubles when it's actually 3100 or whatever, so both I and the shop get a profit
3) A few cool old coins I always wanted but couldn't afford because they were worth $50 or $100 or $200 or somesuch (such as some rarer 18th century Russian pieces, and a little bit of gold)
4) If I have anything left, give it away to whichever adult relative I meet first (likely mother) to exchange for normal money, then if the relative happens to be very nice they can give some of the normal money back to me and I could probably spend it just fine (and even if they don't, well I already bought what I wanted, so what's the problem now?)

I'm with Tim. A pallet of boxes of $1 coins into a checking account and then on to half what I need to do and half what I want to do.

The coin fairy has already visited me.
I have something more numismatically valuable to me than any coin:
I have a lifelong love for numismatics generally, but I would still like to know more.
I can share what I have, but nobody can steal it from me.

Easy. Id buy 30,000 uncleaned roman coins, a 48mm ptolemy coin, a gold aureus and the rest would buy every Constantine II campgate with the SMHA mintmark that comes up for sale until I am satisfied. And SMHB and SMHG if its a good celator.

Also a london mint BEATA TRAN with starry field helmet.

While undoubtedly much of it would go on coins for my main collection (I still have many gaps and lots of coins I'd like to improve upon) I think I might also splash out of a few numismatially interesting (to me anyway!) items that fall out of my normal interests.

For example, I quite like this:

You're-Paid-A-Visit-By-The-Coin-Fairy

The history of it is that during the English Civil War, several towns, including in this case Newark, were obliged to produce coinage from materials to hand. So silver plates and bowls were cut up and the pieces stamped with the value of the 'coin' based on weight.

Newark is particularly well known for such pieces, many of which were subsequently pierced so that they could be worn as mementos or Royalist badges. Or possibly since Newark was besieged three times by Parliamentary forces, and during the final siege there was plague in the citadel, the mementos were considered lucky by survivors.

Quite why this one is engraved thus is unclear. But it's a nice piece both of numismatic and historical interest to me.

Another item I'd probably buy is a 'touchpiece'. But I'll save that story for another day!

So, remind me again Tbone. Exactly when is the fairy arriving with my cash?

I'd try to find and buy a deep cameo 61 DDR Franklin proof half dollar.
Then the $1 coins thing to have new cabinets installed for my wife.

This would make my MS65 or higher classic commemorative hunting a lot easier. Current total in my collection=0.

I would buy either a 1796 S-96 or 1801 S-217 large cent and if I had enough left over (doubtful) I'd get a low grade 1803 S-264 large cent.
