Took a quick look at a few random Morgans from the latest find. Sheesh, VAMming is hard, especially if the coins are circulated. This 1900-P is in better shape than most of ours so I took a look at it and checked it against the 'better' VAMs on VAMworld.

My first stop was VAM11 and it seemed to fit but then I noticed it might be VAM24. It does have quintupled stars on the obverse and I think it exhibits the 'alligator eye' of VAM24, although the pictures on vamworld weren't that clear.

Is this date 2.5 denticles from the neck or 2.2? I think it's 2.5, which fits with VAM24.

What do you think, CCF? Do I have my first decent VAM?

These are USB scope pictures so the whole-coin shot is terrible. I'll get out the real camera at some point and take better pictures of the entire coin.

Nicely done. You figured out the important pickups, did the right deductive reasoning, found the two most likely culprits, determined what needed to be decided between them and posted clear, correct images the first time. I like you.

It's V24. The stars, eye and date location nail it. Note, an "alligator eye" involves a second line inside the eye from the actual edge of the device on the eye; anything on the field in front (left) of the eye is a scratch or crack.
