Hi there.

I have this coing that looks just like a sovereign. One side has George on it but with Greek writing. The other side is the horse but no date!. The coin is not perfectly printed as you can tell by the edges so that's why I quiz what it could be. I'm not sure of the proof..it has a "goldie" look to it but then looks "silverish" aswell.

Any info would be great!!

Why they choose to use imitation sovereigns is anyone's guess.

Yep, it's a Basilopita coin. It's traditional to hide a sovereign in the cake; many families can't afford a genuine sovereign, so these lookalike substitutes with Greek lettering are made instead. I have a similar piece, you can see it here in this thread. Mine is even dated, 1958.
