Does anyone know of this 'DOT' below the date on a 1864 2 Cent Coin?
The 'DOT' is in relief, whereby the north end is higher than the south end because the south end has been worn down. Thanks for any help offered.

Well.., my pics do not show it, but it is a full circle with the south point (relief) worn off. And there is not any indentation on the south end. Dark area is environmental.

It looks like either a die chip or damage the coin is worn enough that evidence of the gouge may have been erased. I have one or two 1864s and have not seen a variety like this. If it was a die chip then I would have expected to come across more the large number date is fairly common.

On a postive note, I think the date is an RPD. Often, remnants of an underlying date are retained inside numerals. Here, you can see a remnant of an 8/8 in the 8's lower loop. I think I see a 6/6 too.

Thanks for the heads up on the RPD. I checked again and I believe you are right.
