Hi,

First of all would this referred-to S-165 Whisker variety also be equivalent to The S-165 Second Hair Style as shown by the attached obverse shot?

Would someone point out with an arrow exactly what part of these photos is being utilized to support the S-165 Whisker variety and if applicable how it differs from the Second Hair Style variety?

Thanks
mdpmedia

It definitely isn't S-165, I'm coming up with 161. I see it as a first hair variety with type II letters and a small 8. that narrows it down quite a bit. Then the T in LIBERTY is very far right compared to the junction of the hair and forehead. that takes it down to S-160, 61, and 62. S-162 has a very compact date so it is out. 160 and 161 both have the same obv. But on the OP coin the die crack through the top of the ATE of STATES is there but faint. That makes it S-161.

In Penny Whimsy 165-167 are listed as,"(Large 8, style 2' lettering and hair)"

O: "Y distant from T and low; 8 large, high, 0.5 mm from drapery; point of 1 closer to hair than curl"
R: The numbers & positions of the berries and leaves seem the same to me. example: "the pair of leaves under T widely separated from wreath stem". I am still working on understanding many of the other Sheldon's descriptions.
