Found this 71P JFK roll searching the other day- is this a pitted die or PMD?

Thanks for any help on this.

Chuck.

I have to think it PMD. A "pitted die" - at least from my experience with similar Morgans - is rust affecting the die, eating metal away and leaving the actual "pitting" in the die. It therefore transfers to the struck coin as raised dots, "pimples" if you will. Your coin looks pitted on the surface, which means it'd have to be pimples on the die. Not possible, IMO. Await further opinion before you count completely on me, though, as I've no real experience with this series. It may be a known phenomenon.

Thanks Dave.

I see what you mean about the pimples not being on the die itself. Makes sense!

I posted over on Coneca also, so maybe between there and here, Mr. Diamond hopefully will respond.

I'm leaning towards PMD, but with the outside possibility it might be a struck through something?

There are similar dots etc on the reverse to a much smaller degree

They are by the ED of United, the TES in States, and above the LL in Dollar.
