Can you post pictures with more of the coin? My first reaction is Longacre doubling (common for 3cn) but I think additional pictures would be necessary to say that since it does not look like typical Longacre doubling. I have the Authoritative Reference for 3cn, while not comprehensive, it does have many of the major varieties. In this book, there are 4 DDO varieties for 1865. All of them have doubling in various letters of America, United and States so if you could individual pictures of those words it would help. Some also will show doubling in the date so if you could post a close up of the full date, that would be helpful as well. Cheers!

Almost certainly Longacre doubling. Note the doubling on the A is on the right side of the letter while the doubling on the C is on the left side inside the C.

I will double check when I get home tonight (any excuse to look at my 3cn reference book works for me) but based on what Condor said and the updated picture, I believe it is Longacre doubling.

I still believe it is Longacre doubling. Looking at the image on a different screen, I can see the doubling on each side of the top serif of the C.

Quote: Longacre doubling is often all the way around the device, or at least in two directions. True on earlier die states but as the die wears or is polished it can remove the doubling from one side or the other. Also note my earlier comment, it is in two different directions just not on the same letter. I don't think you could get Machine Doubling on two adjacent letters with the doubling being 180 degrees apart in direction.
