When I posted this coin in another forum I was told that it was a broken wing tip variety. I can see the separated wing tip, but would anyone be able to explain what that means in terms of history, scarcity, etc., please? Also,I'm guessing that it has a more official designation, what would that be? Thanks, I appreciate the help.

The broken wing is from the hub, which is also seen in 1858. It doesn't command a premium in 1857 unless it is also a double die. I'd recommend buying Rick Snow's attribution guide at http://www.indiancent.com - if you don't want the whole thing, you can buy them by the year.
