What do you all think of the Union Shield design?

I personally like the change but I'm sure 99.8% of the non coin collecting / historically educated population could tell you what it represents or where it was used before.

I thought the change was a weak one... lots of better ideas were floated and they went with the safe one. I preferred the old penny at this point.

I really do not care for it. I liked the 2009 series reverse but for some reason, I still prefer the memorial. Just call me an old fogey.

Having seen the designs they turned down I'm not a fan. Had I not seen those designs I would have liked it a lot more.

I like it well enough. I would have probably gone with design proposal 15, though. It would have provided a nice continuity back to the Flying Eagle cent.

I like it b/c it reminds me of a more classic design. The LCM was nice, and I loved showing kids the little Abe Lincoln inside the Memorial building, but for some reason I also like the LWC design better than the LCM.

I like it and it was my preference when they were shopping the design candidates around. I like it as it harkens back to symbolism and allegory. While I'm OK with dead presidents and historical figures like Sacagawea for obverses, we can probably do without the buildings that are on the cent and nickel reverses.

I haven't seen the other designs, so I like it just fine!
I think it looks nice and simple. The 2009 designs were okay for a limited issue but they look too complicated for my tastes. Just like the State Quarters. ENOUGH already! we dont need 394 different designs on the same coin over the course of 10 years.

You can check the other designs here:

Like I said - I think they went for the safest simplest design and missed. There were at least 3 that would have been easily acceptable and would last for generations. (well if the penny last that long).

Thats my biggest complaint with it too, it looks like they just took the lazy way out and went with the easiest. The sheild with the wreath I liked a lot if they were going with a shield, the eagle and the capitol ones were gorgeous too. They didnt pick the worst design in my opinion but they did seem to look for something that would be easy to do which makes me like it less

Well the natural progression would have had a completed capitol building be in the mix... since the last of 2009's were the building of it in the back round.

I liked the Eagle design on LP17 or the feather and sword over the shield... like I said - at least 3 others would have been cool - instead we end up with the shield.

You're right.. they picked the simplest one.
Its still my favorite of the designs though.. Maybe the other shield one.. but it looks cluttered.
I think they made a good decision.

Doug agreed, I liked those as well. I really like the idea of finishing the capital as a continuation of the 09 series. Telling a story like that adds something to it for me.

Bay we all have different tastes, definitely not knocking someone that like it. It bothers me more for the fact theyre just going with the easiest to make because theyve done that with other coins too and I dont like them going that route. The 5 star generals had some amazing designs and instead we got one design recycled for all the coins. Same thing with some of the ATBs in terms of picking the easiest. Simple is fine, just dont always pick the easiest design every time when a lot of the ones being rejected have been amazing.

The simplest design was probably selected because it would be the easiest to strike up with low relief, low pressure, and high speed.
