I took a few minutes to compare JEH MacDonald's full "Sumacs" painting to the cropped version that appears on the new Go7 coin and thought I'd share what I found - the light blue circle is approximately the area depicted on the new coin. It's clear the new coin does not capture the entire painting (an impossible task if any level of the painting's detail is to be maintained), but it does appear that the RCM has done a reasonable job in capturing the "essence" of the painting. Note: The "Sumacs" image is courtesy of the National Gallery of Canada and is being used in compliance with their non-commercial "Terms of Use." The original image can be found here: http://www.gallery.ca/en/see/collec...hp?mkey=7606Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved.

Very awkward coin I have to admit. Really different than all the others Go7 coins

Why is everyone saying the coin has gone downhill? Because they are abstract? Some of the most valauable paintings in the world are abstract. True, most people don't understand abstract art. Some of them look like something painted by a two year old.

Not that at all...the painting can be abstract or not, but they can depict it better on a coin...or choose a different painting.
Th guardian coin was not engraved in the best way...they could have added some cameo or something to make it pop or stand out.
I would have chosen different paintings all together...I dont mind the sumacs painting...but the coin just looks terrible

Personally, I've never been a big fan of abstract. But there was one coin that I found interesting:

the point is not abstract or not, but the coin should somehow represent or deliver the spirit of the oringinal art. Appraretly, the 5th did not. At least, I can not get it. The 6th is slightly better....

I think hey picked a good (round) area of the picture. If make a circle in the center, you'd get ~same flowers + huge empty spot. Unlike the guardian, I have no objections with this selection. Will see how it looks when in hands though.

If the RCM's "Shopping Cart" is displaying accurate inventory numbers, the new Go7 coin is down to under 65 pieces available (at least directly from the RCM).

I'm wondering if these coins would have looked better without the outer ring and the whole entire face was engraved. So far I love my set. The guardian is a little weak but that's ok. Toronto Morning might be my favourite one.
